Latest news Father’s Day Mountain Bike Race – the young riders take the day in all categories [Sun Jun 20 16:07:05 PDT 2010] While the weather forecasters called for rain, it fortunately held off until the finish of racing as mountain bike racers from all over the Maritimes gathered in Dieppe at the Rotary Park for some cross country action. There were races for all levels of experience and all ages. In the children’s races riders as young as 8 took to the trails of the park for a short but fun event. After the children’s races it was time for the teens and adults to have some longer distance fun. In the thirty minute race three riders duked it out for top spot with the race going to 13 year old Celina Hebert of Moncton. The D category race, which is an introductory category event, saw 12 riders in the event. Young Simon Trivet from PEI was leading for an hour when he had a mechanical problem that forced him to run his bike most of the final lap. This allowed Patrick Hebert of Dieppe to take the win. Trivet still managed a 5th place finish and the admiration of the fans for his effort. ... Trivet still managed a 5th place finish and the admiration of the fans for his effort.
The C category race had 8 riders and again a young rider was the day’s strongest with 14 year old Brent Noble from Truro NS taking the lead and holding it for the win. The B category race saw a field of 16 ranging in age from 15 to 50 and once more youth triumphed with 15 year old Neil Symington of Sussex taking a strong lead early in the race. Second placed finisher Josh Lamkey of Fredericton was able to hold him for most of the race but with 20 minutes left in the race the young Symington put a gap between them that Lamkey just could not close. In the A category race which represents the elite riders of NB, an early strong group of three riders established a big lead on all the other riders in the race. Jeff Currie, Mike Leblanc and Jean Richard Cormier pushed each other hard riding consistent 15 minute laps – in the third lap though, 18 year old Cormier pulled away from the two older riders and over the next 2 laps build an ever growing lead, to take the solo victory after 5 hard laps of racing.
The next event on the Velo NB race calendar is a road race in Memramcook on July 18 – details of this race will be available on www.velo.nb.ca.
Photos of the event can be found here.
